Eat!! Starvation does not lead to weight loss!!

This is my main issue when i get a new client either starting a programme with me or just asking for advice on healthier eating.

I get a lot of people who make the mistake of missing out on the most important meal! Breakfast!
Skipping meals or paying too much attention to calories that they eat one bad meal for the day (i.e. Burgers and fries) and fail to eat anything else in order to "lose weight"

I am here to tell you This is FAR from the case.
Without going too deep into technicalities, Starving yourself will help you feel skinnier the first couple days as your abs gets tighter, surprised, after a few days, your body will get used to it not receiving the right nutrient, switching it into "Starvation mode".

Starvation mode is basically the result of your brain believing there is not enough supply of food as it needs, so what it does is hold on to all the nutrients you consume.
Your metabolism switches into starvation mode; this is when your brain will signal to the body that food will not come as often as it did, hence the body storing everything that it does consume, rather than to digest and use for energy!
You have less energy to perform everyday tasks as energy is being released at a slower rate.

Now your body's metabolism will slow down and you will burn fat at a slower rate, you can lose lean muscle mass from lack of nutrition and losing water weight would make you feel like you have lost weight.
Eventually, you body gets used to depending on little food and 'weight loss' stops. You reduce your diet even more and the cycle continues.

How to prevent starvation mode?

  • Eating at least 5 times a day; an average stomach is the size of a fist, so why not cut your meals into smaller portions and consume every few hours.
  • Never go hungry, when you feel hungry, grab a fruit and water! grab some peanuts! pack a ready-to-eat salad.
  • PLAN YOUR MEALS. Fail to plan, you plan to fail, these little containers can be bought from the pound shop! i have at least six! I just grab one when i feel peckish, have it with a coffee, green tea, or water!
  • Avoid going hungry so you don't binge on the wrong food.
  • Make sure you feed yourself with all nutrients, you can ask for my advice on the right nutrients needed or creating yourself a little meal plan. When you have all the right nutrients, you are less likely to crave "junk foods"
  • Do remember to treat yourself at least once a week to a cheat meal, this should be a meal and not a day and helps to raise your metabolism for the weak ahead

Starving yourself can also lead to an unhappy you! Do this for you! Plan your meals and you will feel great and healthy!
Remember! Training is only 20% of keeping healthy! Your body comes from the kitchen! Feed it well and you will be surprised at your results!

So, to sum up! Starvation does NOT help weight-loss!!; A balanced diet does.
Avoiding Breakfast is a really poor way to start the day!!

Healthier meals you should try to consider in your breakfast;
  • Brown bread
  • Weetabix or any other (wheaty) cereal
  • Oats
  • Banana - a great boost of energy!
  • Fruit juice
  • Semi- skimmed milk (green) if you cannot do Skimmed (red).
Always have a fruit on you, from apples, oranges, to mangos, or even dried fruits!

Another great suggestion is smoothies! They taste great and a good way to get your Five a day!

You could also try adding a breakfast pack or a cereal bar into your bag if you would not have time to make it in the morning!

No excuses to avoiding breakfast guys!
