Don't forget to stretch!

Whilst most of us do a great job with our building or strengthening the muscles strengthening, many of us neglect stretching!

It is very easy to forget to stretch; a lot of gym users consider it a waste of time as they are not educated on the benefits and additionally, the effects of not stretching!

Over the years, a lot of us have learnt the importance of warming up and now incorporate it into our daily workout (some of us still don't *side-eyes*) We have been told to warm up and cool down but many of us don't know why we need to so we just skip it.

Yes, building those muscles will get you looking fitter, stronger, possibly leaner, but what do you now do when it comes to performing daily activities, i.e touching your toes!

Many people struggle to get their hands to touch their back, toes or even properly clean themselves as they have reduced flexibility which could have been avoided by regular stretching.

When exercising or doing daily activities, The muscles are contracted (shortened). when there is no stretching, the muscles starts to feel tighter as they are being shortened and not stretched, this eventually starts to reduce the range of movement and reduce flexibility of those muscles. The body compensates for this reduced flexibility by bringing in the back bones most usually and causing back problems especially in the lower back.

Solution

It's simple! Start Today! Dedicate a 10-15 minutes slot in your workout plan to stretching and cooling down. It is always included in my clients workout program. Here are a few benefits of why you should start stretching!

  • Stretching will increase your flexibility, this will creates a better quality of life as it allows a smoother range of movement from the joint.
  • It decreases the risks of spinal injuries and other bone related injuries.
  • It helps to relax the muscles and can be very therapeutic.
  • It helps to improve our posture as you improve your muscular balance
  • It encourages a better flow of oxygenated blood and nutrients to the soft tissues.
  • Helps to strengthen your control of your muscles so you have a more effective training session!

Starting your fitness journey - When and what to eat! 05

This is definitely one of the most asked questions i get!

What do I eat before my gym session? How long after eating can i work out? what can i eat after?

What do I eat before a gym session?

Carbs and fibre! Carbohydrates are the main sources of energy in the body, lack of carbs would make on feel fatigued but too much can make you tired and just want to sleep!

You can indulge in oats, quinola, whole wheat breads, weetabix; It is better to stick to whole grain products.

How long after eating can i work out?

You should give yourself a good 2-3 hours after eating the complex type of carbs before working out. You will get the most out of the energy, and chances of cramping will be greatly reduced.

For those who want to eat something 30 minutes before a workout, a banana or kiwi (or both) is a great option!
Banana offers the potassium aids in balancing the ph level and electrolytes in the body reducing your chances of muscle cramps!

Read my recipe for the smoothie

They also work very well as a post workout drink, replacing lost potassium.

What can i eat after?

Protein, protein protein. We all remember from school, Protein helps with Growth and repair.
After working those muscles, you want to build on repairing! Protein is the best source!

You want to eat meals like grilled turkey, fish chicken, or even peanuts.

Try to use my table when making your meals.

Starting your fitness journey - Training plan 04

A good workout programme should cover your short term goal.

It is normally done in meso-cycles on 4 weeks.
Muscles get used to doing a particular workout, so it is ideal to switch it up from time t time for best results!

  • Every 4 weeks, an exercise routine should be altered to 'confuse' the muscles.
  • Make sure you stick to your workout programme. don;t follow trends you see at the gym.
  • Get your input on your programme, if you find it is not working for you, get a personal trainer.
  • When measuring your goals, please do not stick to weighing scales!!
  • Get yourself a tape measure, check your body fat percentage! these are more effective ways to measure fat loss.
  • If you are struggling creating a workout programme, contact me and we can work out something just for you!

Your fitness journey! Creating yourself a workout programme! 03

Creating a workout programme is key to getting the best out of your fitness journey!

Workout programmes are meant to be designed for you!
Knowing your interest, strengths and your weakness, working with all these factors in mind to create you a programme with effective results.

Before you step into the gym or waste a lot of money on equipments, go back to the previous article (Why you are doing it) work out what your goal is and how you can achieve it? if it is muscle mass, you would need to build on your body weight then move to lifting heavier.

Five factors to remember when creating a workout programme!

  • S - Make sure your goal is SPECIFIC! i.e. I want to gain 2 inches on my triceps, or i want to lose an inch on my waist line.
  • M - Measurable; when you are setting the goal, have you considered the time you have given yourself? i.e drop a dress size in 3 months, or lose _lbs in 3 months.
  • A - Achievable; Do not set a goal to push yourself!! set a goal that you KNOW you can achieve! Don't set a goal like lifting 70 kg by next week if you can only lift 20 kg this week.
  • R - It's good to push yourself but be REALISTIC with your goal! If you are unable to achieve your goal, your motivation will drop. Make a realistic goal and it will boost your confidence!
  • T - Timed; Set a time! A Target! This gives you something to work towards! This is a great way to keep you motivated!
If you are struggling to create yourself a programme, contact me, I can help you create your perfect workout routine. It would be specifically designed to improve your fitness and get you to your fitness goal quicker!

Starting your fitness journey-Why Start! 02

The next step before joining the gym and on your journey to a fitter lifestyle, I would like you to ask yourself!
  • Why are you doing it? What are your main reasons?
Is it for your partner, your kids, family members? Being pressured or your personal interest, like to feel good and better about yourself!
I would advice you to ask yourself this questions as the only one that really matters is the last one. Doing it to FEEL better about yourself, this includes, looking better or fitter!

A lot of people join for partners or other factors and never complete their goals, or quit after a while!
Keeping fit is a lifestyle and not a journey so you must do it for yourself!

When you have decided why you are doing it, ask yourself!
  • What are your goals? what do you plan to achieve from this?
Is it weight loss? or weight gain? or just to keep fit and improve your resting heart rate?

If you are doing it to look better, i would advice you take a good look at your body, and understand your body shape!
It would not be the same as another, so you can work to better your body and not to create a replica of another's.
  • What is your budget for gym or do you plan to buy equipments for home training?
Every gym has their own policies and rules, some are contracted, and some work with joining fees, allowing you to stop at any time. You can always find a gym around your budget.
Decide whether you need a personal trainer or not and their prices! Check what they can offer you according to your goals. Contact me if you need help finding other personal trainers around your area. (I mostly cover east london)

  • If you join the gym for your personal gain, you will be more motivated and it would be easier to kickstart yourself with a little motivation from your fitness guru's when you feel you are slacking.
  • Make sure to have a word with your doctor.
  • Get a personal trainer or fitness instructor to set you up.
  • You can even use social and media sites like youtube

Your fitness journey starts with your Eating habit!

Before starting your fitness journey, what you need to consider is how well is your diet?  By this, I mean do you eat a balanced diet, are you an over indulger? or do you not eat appropriately to your weight or are you lacking certain nutrients you should be taking?

What a lot people fail to understand is weight loss doesn't just come from working out, it has a lot to do with what we eat; eating right and eating clean can help to achieve a goal much quicker with exercise.

With the right nutrients and a balanced diet, you will find yourself more energetic and able to carry out your workout plans more efficiently. You will also feel better when you do not over-indulge, this is both mentally and physically!

Your fitness journey starts with your diet!

My advice

  • Make a food diary of what you ate and drank in the last 3 days (everything).
  • Examine what you have written and replace with healthier alternatives. (you can check my blog for tips, or can contact me personally for advice on nutrition)
  • Look at the food plate and try to find any nutrient you are lacking.
  • Work yourself a brief plan. i.e times to consume carbs could be earlier in the day and more protein towards the evening for recovery.
  • Include at least 5 fruits, this should keep you satiated!
  • Try to eat very small portions (about a fist size) every 2-3 hours with lots of water. (this boosts your metabolism (more fat burn)
  • Try to avoid simple carbs like crisps, burgers and chips and go for a healthier option i.e couscous, quinola or brown rice.
  • Make sure you try to sleep earlier to get enough sleep during the night and this could also help with late-night-snacking.
  • Drinking lots of water will help to flush your system and also,
  • Your brain cannot differentiate between hunger and thirst at times, so when you are thirsty, you could think you are hungry leading to over-indulging!
  • Oats and dried fruits, or honey make a great breakfast option!
